Governance
The Academy is governed by a Council of Management, composed of individuals elected by the general membership for a minimum of 3 years, and others co-opted for specific tasks as well as a few ex-officio members. It represents the interests of the membership and contributes to the activities of the learned society through working with the Vice Chairs. An elected Executive Committee develops the strategy, works with Council and oversee the longer term direction of the Academy and ensure an effective implementation of the agreed strategy.

The Executive Committee consists of the President, the Chair, elected Vice-Chairs and an appointed Treasurer. The elected Vice-Chair roles cover the following portfolios of BAM activity:

Kate Black
Kate is a Professor of Management Learning and Education.
Following an early career as a Marine Ecologist at a Field Centre in rural Pembrokeshire, Kate moved into HR management (Recruitment and Development) within retail management. Her key role was to implement the recruitment and development strategy during a period when the branch was under considerable strain both locally in terms of staffing availability, and as a result of changing sales strategies.
Kate joined NBS in Summer 2014 following 10 years at the University of Chester, latterly within Chester Business School. She currently holds the role of Director of Education within the Business School.
Kate is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), a Certified Management and Business Educator (CMBE) and a member of the CIPD (AMCIPD). She co-Chair of the British Academy of Management (BAM) with responsiblity for Management Knowledge and Education (MKE). She also co-leads BAM’s Education-focused Professor programme. Kate has also been Chair of BAM's Identity SIG since 2018
Kate completed her PhD part-time at Lancaster University in August 2013. Her research examined the learning of professionals working within multi-agency teams within a local authority Children’s Services department.
Kate’s research interests lie in examining informal, workplace learning, as a process of ‘being’ and ‘becoming’ (identity) for professionals in the contemporary knowledge economy. Kate is currently working on a funded research project examining inter-generational learning and knowledge exchange within the knowledge economy.
Her research adopts a largely qualitative approach to data generation with particular emphasis upon visual methods such as photo-elicitation, artefactual conversations and the use of participant-generated pictors.
Kate’s pedagogic research examines such areas as student attendance and engagement and students-as-partners. She has worked to maintain the relevance of the research methods and dissertation elements of management education in the light of the changing demographic of management students in UK universities. This has informed one of her projects that examined the role of the undergraduate Business/Management dissertation in developing skills and capabilities for employment.
Kate is a keen road runner, distance trail runner and mountain/hill walker.
Ashley Roberts
Ashley is the Assistant Dean (Internationalisation) at WBS and has presented his research at many conferences, most recently at The Academy of Management, The British Academy of Management and also at Harvard University.
Ashley is an editorial board member of the journal Academy of Management Learning & Education, and publishes in and reviews for top ranked academic journals.
Ashley is a council member for The Management Knowledge and Education division of The British Academy of Management where he both formulates and implements strategy and policy with the Executive/Academy offices. He is a previous Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) Associate, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an academic member of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and also a member of The International Centre for Research in Organizational Discourse, Strategy and Change.
Ashley is a National Teaching Fellow, a winner of The Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence and is a Fellow of the Warwick International Higher Education Academy. Ashley is also the Director of The Warwick (Full-Time) MBA and holds Visiting Professorships at leading global institutions.
Ashley gained a PhD from Cardiff University where he also previously taught on a variety of courses at Cardiff Business School. Ashley teaches on Undergraduate, Warwick MBA and Master's level courses. He is the internal examiner for the Undergraduate module 'Styles of Coaching and Team Leadership: An Interdisciplinary Approach'. Ashley is also the internal examiner on the Organisational Behaviour Executive variant of the Warwick MBA and has taught Organisational Behaviour MBA Modules in Brussels, Chile, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai and Venice. Each year Ashley wins an award for his outstanding contribution to Undergraduate teaching and he also receives the Warwick Business School Outstanding MBA Teacher Award annually.
Stephanie Decker
BAM President
The role of BAM President is to:
- Provide leadership in external relations between BAM and stakeholders such as government and its agencies, other learned societies, practitioner and professional societies and universities.
- Bring to bear network contacts for the benefits of BAM membership.
- Influence external stakeholders at a senior level, enhancing the stature of BAM in the eyes of others and increasing the impact of BAM in UK society and economy.
- Support the intellectual activity of the learned society.
- Encourage the development and expansion of knowledge in the field of management.
- In collaboration with the Chair and Vice-Chairs, contributing to, and influencing, the setting of strategic aims and communicating these internally to members and externally to other stakeholders.
- Support recruitment and growth in membership.

Act as confidential recipient of ‘whistleblowing’ or complaints from members.
BAM Chair
The role of BAM Chair is to:
- Develop BAM strategy and agree priorities with the Executive and Council
- Chair Council meetings and support Council activities
- Chair Executive meetings and support the activities of the Vice Chairs
- Support the CEO in the running of the office and the operation of society as a whole
- Support the BAM community in pursuing the vision and purpose of the learned society
- Work with the President to agree foci and liaise with external stakeholders

Vice Chair Portfolios
All Vice-Chairs have the responsibility for reviewing and development of new membership services and recruitment of new members. In addition to chairing the relevant committee and playing a role in the strategic development of BAM, the Vice Chair are expected to develop their role in particular areas, including but not limited to:
Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity and Respect (EDIR)
- Ensure that the core values of Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity and Respect (EDIR) are fully embedded and reflected in all BAM activities, including Conference, events, SIGs, publications, research, grants, awards and the Fellows College.
- Work with the BAM Office to oversee monitoring of EDIR across all BAM activities, as above but also including website, social media and membership, and to report to the BAM Executive Committee on progress,
- Work across committees to advise, alert and recommend best practice actions to improve EDIR.
- Engage with appropriate external parties working with improving EDIR to bring best practice into BAM and the wider BAM community.
Sustainability
- Ensure that the core values of sustainability in all its forms are fully embedded and reflected in all BAM activities, including Conference, events, SIGs, publications, research, grants, awards and the Fellows College.
- Work with the BAM Office to oversee monitoring of sustainability across all BAM activities, as above but also including website, social media and membership, and to report to the BAM Executive Committee on progress,
- Work across committees to advise, alert and recommend best practice actions to improve sustainability and raise awareness and promote sustainability in business and management education and research.
- Engage with appropriate external parties working with improving sustainability to bring best practice into BAM and the wider BAM community.
Special Interest Groups
- Oversee governance rules for SIGs
- Implement the guidelines for the formation of SIGs
- Oversee funding of SIGs
- Enabling learning and knowledge sharing between SIG chairs
- Encourage SIG activities throughout the year
- Act as a route for SIGs to have voice and input in the executive
Academic Affairs of Conference and Capacity Building
- Oversee academic issues of the annual conference
- Oversee key events e.g. doctoral symposium and summer workshop
- Develop and monitor the provision of events which cover the academic career, writing and methods (with appropriate SIGs)
- Support capacity building for strategic priorities such as influencing policy making, engaging stakeholders and publicity and engaging with world-class academics internationally
- Liaise with other VCs and SIG chairs to support their capacity building activities.
Research and Publications
- Consider how we open up scholarly research work, rather than constraining it e.g. promoting monographs, considering the impact of the ABS list
- Consider how we encourage innovation and the development of management scholarship, possibly by holding a debate and bringing people of experience and standing in
- Consider what BAM might do to help increase the flow of researching funding to the community, and consult with BAM members who are in appropriate RC networks
- Journals – in consultation with those previously involved, as appropriate, work on establishing some ground rules for the relationship between the editors, the executive, council and BAM
- Investigate the possibility of having a new journal and/or a platform for on-line, open access journals – possibly in conjunction with the British Library
- Consider how we should best recognise the heterodoxy of people’s research careers – e.g. part time PhDs, people without PhDs but who have been teaching for 10 years – are they ‘early career’?
- Oversee the administration of the small grants fund
Management Knowledge and Education
- Develop BAMs approach to supporting high quality learning, teaching and management education by organizing activities and events and engaging with professional bodies and other learned societies
- Work with the Vice-Chair (Academic Affairs of Conference and Capacity Building) to develop capacity building programme for members
- Work with the Vice-Chair (Research and Publications) to develop and launch a management knowledge and education journal
- Develop and support BAM learning, teaching and management education awards
- Develop and support BAM MKE small grant scheme
Treasurer
- In liaison with the CEO, oversee BAM finances and resources and liaise with the auditors
- Present financial and resource issues and plans to the Executive Committee
- Participate with the Chair and other Vice-Chairs in decision making

The role of Council is to formulate strategy and policy, and to implement strategy in conjunction with the Executive and Academy office.

Kate Black

Dr Sahar Bakr
Dr Sahar Bakr is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Marketing at Nottingham Trent University.
A pharmacist by background she holds an MSc in Biotechnology and Entrepreneurship and a PhD in Business and management from the University of Nottingham which focuses on consumer use of smart devices in the context of health, fitness and self-tracking.
Sahar spent time in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry as a Product Manager, where she managed several social media campaigns and worked with organisations to launch both consumer (B2C), and medical-grade (B2B) products successfully in the MENA region.
Her experience in industry has formed the basis of her teaching ethos which is centred around the power of industry-focused marketing education and the application of theoretical concepts, to real-life situations.
Before joining NTU, Sahar held a full-time position at De Montfort University, after working part-time at the University of Nottingham and Birmingham City University while doing her PhD.
During her time in higher education, she designed, led and taught several modules on undergraduate, MSc, and MBA courses which included Direct Marketing, Global Marketing, Digital Consumer Behaviour, Digital Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Marketing and Project Management.
Professor Yehuda Baruch
Yehuda Baruch (DSc Technion, Israel, PostDoc at City University and London Business School) is a Professor of Management at Southampton Business School, the University of Southampton, UK, and Affiliated Professor, Audencia, Nantes France. His research covers a broad range of topics, with a particular focus on careers and global HRM.
He has published over 175 refereed papers, including in Journal of Management, Academy of Management Annals, Human Resource Management, Organizational Dynamics, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Human Relations, Research Policy and Organization Studies among other journals, and over 50 books and book chapters. His work is widely cited (over 30,000 Google Scholar citations, H-index of 83). Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and BAM. Consulting Editor, Journal of International Business Studies. Formerly: Vice-president Research of EURAM, Associate Editor of Human Resource Management (US), Editor of Group & Organization Management and Career Development International; Chair, Careers Division, Academy of Management.
Professor Jamie Callahan
Jamie L. Callahan (EdD, PhD) is Professor of Organisation and Ethics at Durham University. Her EdD from George Washington University explored systems of emotion in organisational change. Her PhD from Tilburg University addressed issues of power in Critical HRD. A USAF veteran, she served as a personnel officer and member of the Pentagon Air Staff Total Quality consultancy team. Jamie’s academic career has spanned multiple institutions prior to her present position, including Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Drexel, and Northumbria universities. Her research addresses issues of power and privilege in organised contexts, leading her to explore marginalised groups’ experiences of leadership, learning, and organisational transformation. Her particular passion is championing gender equity. The former Editor of Human Resource Development Review and current Co-Editor of International Journal of Management Reviews, Jamie has published extensively, including in journals such as Human Relations, Organization Studies, Violence Against Women, International Journal of Management Reviews, Human Resource Development Quarterly, and Human Resource Development International. She has also earned numerous research awards, including the Academy of Human Resource Development 2020 Scholar of the Year Award and 2015 Outstanding Book of the Year Award. As an educator, she has been a visiting professor in Saudi Arabia, France, England, and Thailand. She is a feminist, editor, author, mentor, activist, and educator.
Dr Mollie Bryde-Evens
Dr Mollie Bryde-Evens finished her VC-Scholarship funded PhD in October 2023 and is currently a full-time Lecturer in Ethical Business and Responsible Management at Liverpool Business School.
Mollie’s scholarly background is in philosophy and normative ethics, and her broad areas of interest are triple bottom line sustainability and business ethics, with a focus on normative ethical theories.
She was awarded the Emerging Scholars Award by the Society of Business Ethics in 2022. Mollie is also interested in and passionate about EDIR related issues, and was a co-founder of the first EDIR society at Liverpool John Moores: the RIDE (Respect, Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity) Society.
She also co-leads an inclusion and diversity project titled 'I Belong!'. Beyond this, Mollie is Co-lead of the Early Career Academic Network for the British Academy of Management (BAM) and is a BAM council member.
Prof Qile (Horace) He
Professor Qile He, also known as Horace, is a Professor of Strategy and Performance Management at the University of Derby, UK. He was previously a Reader in Operations Management and the Associate Head of School for Research of the School of Strategy and Leadership at Coventry University, UK, successfully leading the school research portfolio. His research expertise and interests are in the area of interfirm alliances and partnerships, innovation strategies and processes of organizations, as well as sustainable and responsible business, and inter-organizational knowledge transfer. He has published over 80 papers in refereed journals, books, and leading international conference proceedings.
Dr Marian Iszatt-White
Marian Iszatt-White is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS). She entered academia after a successful career in financial risk management, latterly as Group Treasurer of Top 100 plc Enterprise Oil, having also worked in the specialist engineering and hospitality industries. Since joining LUMS, she has served as Director of the School’s Executive MBA and is now Director of their doctoral programmes. Her research interests revolve around the practice turn in leadership and its implications for ‘aspirational’ forms of leadership (such as Authentic Leadership) and leadership development. She has published in journals such as Leadership, Management Learning, Organization Studies and Journal of Business Ethics, as well as having a recent review article on Authentic Leadership in IJMR. She is has published four books, including a post-graduate leadership textbook (now in its third edition) and an edited volume on leadership as emotional labour.
